This book presents the frist research effort that discusses serious endeavours within the United Arab Emirates to deal with urban history. It is the result of five years of focussed research on the question of «what should we do with our older city districts?» It was mainly developed in Cario, Sharjah, and Dubai cities during the author's active involvement in teaching and professional consultation for urban heritage conservation in both Egypt and the United Arab Emirates.
This book documents the efforts of the U.A.E. to conserve its urban heritage for the next generations of who coned not experience the pride their urban history for themselves. The book adopts a methodology of comparative discussions to clarify the approaches adopted in dealing with history in the city. In doing so, it provides an insight on the role of historic urban districts within our modern cities.
